A multipurpose genetic algorithm, ‘ga.’ was employed for thermal design optimization of the spiral plate heat exchanger (SPHE). Thanks to its low fouling and easy descaling, the spiral heat exchanger could be a proper alternative to other heat exchangers, whose process materials have a lot of sediment. The present study addressed the modeling, analysis, and optimization of SPHEs to mathematically model SPHE based on energy balance equations to determine the temperature distribution within SPHE. The total heat transfer coefficient and logarithmic mean temperature were calculated and the process was optimized by MATLAB programming. The proposed multipurpose genetic algorithm relies on simultaneous cost minimization and lowering pressure drops at channels, considering the geometric proportion of SPHE. Optimized heat transfer coefficient, compared to its first value at basic design, had a 60% increase. Also in optimized case, heat transfer coefficient and total cost have been improved up to 60% increment and 50% reduction, respectively. The optimization results and heat transfer calculations showed good consistency with formulation for SPHEs |
